5 Exciting Winter Activities in Oxford, North Carolina: Plan Now for Winter Fun

1. Fish at Lake Devin Park

You can fish in the stocked lake and enjoy the other park facilities all year from sunrise to sunset. Anglers must have a state fishing license as well as a Lake Devin permit, available from the town Parks and Recreation office. While you’re here, you can explore 2.5 miles of nature trails. In fact, the city is hosting a First Day Nature Hike at the lake on January 1, 2025.  Lake Devin Park is located at 3049 Lake Devin Rd.


2. Enjoy the Dog Park

Did you know Granville County’s first dog park is right here in town? Your dog can socialize and play with other furry friends at this safe fenced area. The park has plenty of shade so it’s a great place to relax with your pet. The dog park is located at 313 E Spring St, and it’s open daily from sunrise to sunset.


3. Tour the Historic District

Take a self-guided walking tour to see some of the town’s most notable buildings and landmarks. Main Street and College Street both have stunning examples of Queen Anne, Victorian, Italianate, and Greek Revival architecture. You can get a map of both areas from the town Historic Preservation Commission. It’s a fun way to spend time outdoors and learn more about the town’s fascinating heritage.


4. Walk the Sculpture Trail

While you’re exploring the town on foot, don’t miss the 10 eclectic artworks on the sculpture trail. This landmark showcases the work of artists who live in the state. You can start the trail by parking your vehicle at the Richard H. Thornton Library, 210 Main St. Maps are available from the Downtown Economic Development Corporation at 300 Williamsburg St.


5. Explore Falls Lake State Recreation Area

This state park is just a 15-minute drive from town, so jump in your GMC Terrain for an adventure. Falls Lake State Recreation Area in Wake Forest offers 25 miles of hiking trails, 14 miles of biking trails, fishing, picnic shelters, and bird watching. Several campgrounds offer the opportunity to spend the night in nature.

Spend time in the nature center to learn more about the park’s plants and animals. You can visit from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through February 28, except on Christmas Day.
